I. What is ductile iron pipe?
Ductile iron pipes, often referred to as "ductile pipes," are manufactured from a material known as "ductile iron." This material is produced by adding a spheroidizing agent—typically magnesium or a rare-earth magnesium alloy—to molten iron during the smelting process. As a result, the graphite in the cast iron transforms from a flaky structure into a spherical one, thereby significantly reducing the disruptive effect of flaky graphite on the iron matrix.
This change in microstructure results in significantly higher strength, ductility, and toughness compared to conventional gray cast iron; its performance is comparable to that of steel, which is why it is also referred to as “cast steel pipe.”

III. Major Manufacturing Processes

Melting: Melting raw materials such as pig iron and scrap steel into molten iron.
Spheroidizing treatment: Add a spheroidizing agent and a inoculant to the molten iron.
Centrifugal casting: Molten iron that has undergone spheroidization is injected into a high-speed rotating metal mold (tubular mold), where it takes shape under the action of centrifugal force and rapidly cools.
Annealing: The pipe billets formed by casting need to undergo high-temperature annealing to decompose the cementite within them, forming a matrix primarily composed of ferrite, thereby achieving high toughness and ductility.
Finishing and Anti-corrosion: Perform external anti-corrosion treatments such as zinc spraying and asphalt coating, as well as construct a cement mortar lining on the inner wall.
