Liaocheng Zhengrong Steel Pipe

Ductile iron pipe

Ductile iron pipes, often referred to as "ductile pipes," are cast using a material known as "ductile iron." This material is produced by adding a spheroidizing agent—typically magnesium or a rare-earth magnesium alloy—to molten iron during the smelting process. As a result, the graphite in the cast iron transforms from flake-like to spherical, thereby significantly reducing the disruptive effect of flake graphite on the iron matrix.

  • Product Description
  • I. What is ductile iron pipe?

Ductile iron pipes, often referred to as "ductile pipes," are manufactured from a material known as "ductile iron." This material is produced by adding a spheroidizing agent—typically magnesium or a rare-earth magnesium alloy—to molten iron during the smelting process. As a result, the graphite in the cast iron transforms from a flaky structure into a spherical one, thereby significantly reducing the disruptive effect of flaky graphite on the iron matrix.

This change in microstructure results in significantly higher strength, ductility, and toughness compared to conventional gray cast iron; its performance is comparable to that of steel, which is why it is also referred to as “cast steel pipe.”

    II. Main Features

Ductile iron pipes combine the corrosion resistance of cast iron with the mechanical properties of steel, exhibiting exceptionally prominent characteristics:

High strength and good toughness: Its tensile strength is three times that of gray cast iron pipes, and its yield strength is five times that of gray cast iron pipes. It exhibits a certain degree of elongation, enabling it to withstand moderate foundation settlement and deformation without being prone to brittle fracture.

Excellent corrosion resistance: Its corrosion resistance is several to dozens of times higher than that of steel pipes, making it ideally suited for direct burial installation. The inner wall is typically lined with a cement mortar coating, which further protects the pipeline and prevents secondary contamination of the water quality.

Long service life: With a designed service life of up to 50–100 years, it serves as the cornerstone of “century-old projects.”

Easy installation and excellent sealing: Utilizing flexible connections (such as T-shaped socket joints), this product allows for quick installation, accommodates small-angle deflections, offers superior seismic resistance, and features reliable, leak-proof connections.

Low operation and maintenance costs: Thanks to its high reliability and long service life, the total lifecycle cost is very low.

    III. Major Manufacturing Processes

Ductile iron pipes are primarily manufactured using the centrifugal casting method:

Melting: Melting raw materials such as pig iron and scrap steel into molten iron.

Spheroidizing treatment: Add a spheroidizing agent and a inoculant to the molten iron.

Centrifugal casting: Molten iron that has undergone spheroidization is injected into a high-speed rotating metal mold (tubular mold), where it takes shape under the action of centrifugal force and rapidly cools.

Annealing: The pipe billets formed by casting need to undergo high-temperature annealing to decompose the cementite within them, forming a matrix primarily composed of ferrite, thereby achieving high toughness and ductility.

Finishing and Anti-corrosion: Perform external anti-corrosion treatments such as zinc spraying and asphalt coating, as well as construct a cement mortar lining on the inner wall.

    IV. Major Application Areas

Ductile iron pipes are virtually standard equipment in the following fields:

Municipal water supply network—the main pipelines and distribution pipes from the water plant to users—is its core application area.

Municipal drainage network: Used for the discharge of rainwater and sewage.

Fire water supply network: Serving as a reliable fire-fighting water pipeline.

Industrial applications: Used for conveying abrasive materials such as mineral slurries and coal powder.

    Agricultural irrigation.

    V. Interface Type and Specifications

    Main interface format:

T-shaped socket joint: a commonly used flexible joint that achieves sealing via a rubber ring, allowing for deflection and displacement.

K-type mechanical interface: This type of interface achieves sealing by tightening a rubber ring with a compression flange and bolts; it is also a flexible interface.

Flange connection: Used for connecting to equipment such as valves and pumps.

    Specification indicates:

Usually indicated by “nominal diameter DN,” with the unit in millimeters.

Common specifications range from DN80 to DN2600 and even larger.

    6. In-depth comparison with related pipe materials

To help you better understand the positioning of ductile iron pipes, the following figure provides a comprehensive comparison—across two dimensions, “relative cost” and “performance/reliability requirements”—with welded steel pipes and PVC-U plastic pipes:

PVC-U plastic pipes are positioned as a low-cost, low-demand solution, such as branch pipes within residential communities.

Welded steel pipes strike a relatively balanced trade-off between cost and performance, but they rely on an anti-corrosion coating.

Ductile iron pipes are positioned as the preferred solution for high-performance, highly reliable municipal main pipeline networks, with clear advantages in total lifecycle cost.

In addition to the core positioning shown in the chart, they also have the following key differences in technical details:

    Summary and Selection Recommendations

Ductile iron pipes are reliable, durable, and cost-effective pipe materials that have been thoroughly tested through long-term engineering practice for use in municipal underground pipeline networks.

    How to choose?

Ductile iron pipes are the clear first choice for urban main water supply networks, critical water transmission lines, areas with stringent leakage prevention requirements, and regions where geological conditions may lead to subsidence. Thanks to their outstanding reliability, long service life, and flexible joints, ductile iron pipes offer undeniable advantages.

Select welded steel pipes: When the working pressure is extremely high, or when special construction methods such as jacking or trenchless installation are required, or when the pipe diameter is very large (exceeding the range of ductile iron pipes), high-quality welded steel pipes can be used in combination with stringent anti-corrosion measures.

Choose plastic pipes: For internal building installations, branch lines within residential communities, or non-permanent, low-pressure applications, you can opt for lower-cost plastic pipes.

Simply put, ductile iron pipes are the “underground Great Wall” that ensures the safety of urban water supply—they serve as the backbone of municipal infrastructure.
